Consultations

Second Opinion Consultations for your pet’s problems will be scheduled with Dr Lea Stogdale, Manitoba’s only internal medicine specialist for cats and dogs.

Consultations are scheduled for one hour during which time Dr Stogdale will listen to your concerns and observations, examine your pet, review your pet’s medical record and test results, discuss the problems, outline your options including the various treatments available, and address your concerns.

Pets that come to Aesops for a second opinion will be referred back to their own veterinarian for any additional tests and for appropriate on-going veterinary needs.

You will be provided with a written copy of Dr. Stogdale’s recommendations and, with your permission, a copy of her notes will be sent to your pet’s primary veterinarian.

Holistic Consultations are scheduled for on hour; some require more time. Holistic consultations for a healthy dog or a healthy cat usually take 30 minutes or so; holistic consultations for pets with medical problems require an hour, depending on the issues that you would like addressed. Consultations for a dog with allergies often require more time.

Your pet’s holistic consultation will include your pet’s medical, nutritional and life-style history, a physical exam, and the following topics:

  • nutrition
  • vaccinations (including blood titre testing)
  • the use of vitamins
  • the use of herbs and supplements

If your pet has an existing health problem, standard and complementary treatment options will be explained and discussed. Some of the conditions that benefit from holistic care include:

  • allergies
  • digestive disorders
  • endocrine or hormone disorders
  • kidney disease
  • heart disease
  • cancer

You will be provided with a written copy of Dr. Stogdale’s recommendations and, if you wish, a copy of her notes will be sent to your veterinarian.

Nutritional Consultations for home prepared diets for pets are becoming more and more common but they should be formulated to provide balanced, complete and optimal nutrition for the individual pet, it’s life-style and medical status.

If you are considering switching your pet to a home prepared diet, at Aesops we customize home made diets to meet the needs of your individual pet.

If you are already feeding your pet a home-prepared diet it is important to ensure that the ingredients and supplements are meeting the nutritional needs of your pet.

Dr Stogdale will tailor the diet to meet the particular needs of your pet and will advise you on how to correctly prepare and use the recipe and supplements.

Nutritional Therapy uses food and supplements to enhance the natural healing abilities of the body. It does this by removing the toxins from the body, restoring the digestion and absorption of food, and correcting protein, fat, carbohydrate, fibre, mineral and vitamin balances. Nutritional therapy aims to optimize the amounts of nutrients that are needed to prevent problems and promote optimum health. This is part of approaching our pets holistically.

Telephone Consultations

Would you like a second opinion by a veterinarian who is a specialist in internal medicine and who approaches our pet friends in a holistic manner with the aim of the best quality of life for as long as possible?

Do you require more information to enable you to make a well informed decision as to the most appropriate healing modality (holistic, complementary, western or conventional, or acupuncture, or palliative) for your pet’s health?

Aesops Vet Care offers consultations services for owners of dogs and cats.

Our services, which can be done by phone, fax and mail, include:

Second Opinion Phone Consultations

Second Opinion Consultations done over the phone or as a written report are common in the human medical field. They are recognized as valuable to both the patient and the professional; many extended health insurance companies now offer this service, eg. Best Doctors for the Chambers of Commerce Group Insurance Plan here in Canada.

Second Opinions are particularly indicated for dogs and cats whose:

  • Medical problem is not fully diagnosed
  • Medical problem is complex, especially when more than one organ is affected.
  • Medical problem has a grave prognosis
  • Condition is chronic and affects quality of life
  • Problems fluctuate unpredictably.

For example:

  • Suspicion of Cancer
  • Vague illness
  • Chronic vomiting or diarrhea
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Skin problems
  • Difficult to stabilize diabetics
  • Addisonian dogs that aren’t back to normal
  • Cushingoid dogs with ongoing problems.

Dr Lea Stogdale has been doing second opinion consultations in Aesops and by telephone for the last fifteen years to the satisfaction of both clients and referring veterinarians. This aspect of her practice is increasing as pet owners become more medically informed.

Second Opinion Phone Consultations are scheduled for one hour, once a copy of the patient’s medical records (including the original laboratory results and electronic files of any radiographs and ultrasound reports) have been received. During the consultation time Dr. Stogdale will review the dog’s or cat’s medical record and test results, discuss the history and the problems with the owner, assess the pet’s whole situation, outline all the options, and address the owner’s concerns. Dr. Stogdale will present the various treatment options and make her recommendations. A copy of her medical assessment will be sent to the owner and to the pet’s primary veterinarian. The owner will be advised to make an appointment with their vet for a follow-up discussion and to pursue any indicated tests or therapies.

The cost of a telephone second opinion consultation is $210 for an hour, payable by credit card.

Holistic Phone Consultations

The Holistic Approach considers the whole animal, not just the physical symptoms. The patient’s physical and mental well being as well as diet and environmental influences are all important considerations.

Holistic medicine emphasizes good nutrition, disease prevention or management with minimal side-effects. It integrates elements from conventional and alternative medicine to complement each other. The Holistic approach does not necessarily mean “alternative,” but rather “complementary” medical modalities as indicated by the pet’s medical condition and the owner’s wishes. A truly holistic approach chooses what’s best for the pet, utilizing nutrition, pharmaceutical medicines, supplements, herbs, neutraceuticals, and even surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. The Holistic approach depends on a diagnosis.

Holistic consultations are especially indicated for dogs & cats when the diagnosed problem results in:

  • Chronic problems that affect the pet’s quality of life
  • Recurrent flare-ups, seasonally or unpredictably
  • The problem worsens over time
  • Allergies resulting in skin problems
  • Allergies resulting in digestive disorder
  • Allergies resulting in breathing difficulties
  • Chronic vomiting or diarrhea
  • Persistent coughing
  • Immune-mediated or auto-immune disease
  • Arthritis
  • Degenerative myelopathy
  • Cancer
  • Heart disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease.

Dr Lea Stogdale has been doing holistic consultations for the last ten years. Increasing numbers of pet owners are requesting her advice as they become better informed about nutrition and supplements. After a little internet research, they want a clear and rational approach to ‘doing the best they can’ for their dog or cat, whether healthy or suffering from a serious health problem.

Holistic Phone Consultation are scheduled for half an hour for a healthy pet or one hour when there are medical problems. A medical diagnosis and a copy of the patient’s medical records (including the original laboratory results) or a summary of the case is required.

During the consultation Dr Stogdale will assess the pet’s whole situation and discuss the follow subjects:

  • The pat’s medical history
  • The pet’s life-style (owner observations)
  • The pet’s current diet
  • The owner’s concerns
  • Recommendations for nutrition
  • Vaccinations (including blood titer testing)
  • Conventional therapies
  • The use of vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants
  • The use of supplements and herbs.

A typed copy of her recommendations will be sent to the owner, and, if the owner wishes, a copy will be sent to the pet’s primary veterinarian.

The cost of a telephone holistic consultation is $210 for an hour, payable by credit card.

Nutritional Therapy and Customized Home Prepared Diets

Owner interest in home prepared diets for pets are becoming more and more common. There is a great deal of conflicting and confusing information on the Internet and in the bookstores about this topic.

Some of the pet food companies provide veterinary offices with their recommendations for home prepared diets. It has been our experience that these recipes are not user friendly, and most pets don’t find them palatable. In addition, they are not specifically formulated for each specific pet and its problems.

A recent study, presented at the ACVIM 2005 conference, analyzed 85 home-cooked diets for dogs and cats that are published in well-respected books. The results are disturbing: Compared to AAFCO recommendations, 55% of the diets contained inadequate amounts of protein; 62% were inadequate in vitamins; 86% were inadequate in various minerals; and 8% were inadequate in essential amino acids. And this is only considering minimal nutritional requirements, not optimal nutrition!

“Computer Analysis of Nutrient Sufficiency of Published Home-Cooked Diets For Dogs and Cats” by S.D. Lauten; T.M. Smith; C.A. Kirk; J.W. Bartges; A.M. Adams at Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences, University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine, Knoxville, TN.

At Aesops we offer nutritional consultations for home prepared diets. We want to set people up for success and ensure they have realistic expectations. While most pets do very well on home prepared diets, they are not the answer to everything, and they require a time commitment on the part of the owner.

Dr. Stogdale will tailor the diet to meet the particular needs of your pet and will advise you on how to correctly prepare and use the recipe and supplements.

Indications for nutritional consultations include:

  • Owners that are considering switching their pet to a home prepared diet. At Aesops we customize home made diets to meet the needs of each individual pet based on breed, age, activity level, body condition and medical problems.
  • Owners that are already feeding their pet a home-prepared diet to ensure that the ingredients and supplements are meeting the nutritional needs of the individual pet.
  • Dogs or cats that benefit from a balanced home prepared diet (ie. allergies, bladders stones, kidney disease, heart disease, intestinal disorders).
  • Pets who require a special diet but don’t find veterinary prescription diets palatable (especially cats with kidney disease, and dogs with kidney and/or heart disease).

Nutritional Phone Consultation are scheduled for half an hour to one hour. A medical diagnosis and a copy of the patient’s recent medical records or a summary of the case is required. During the consultation Dr Stogdale will review the patient file and customize the diet to meet the individual needs of the pet.

At the appointment the following topics will be discussed:

  • the specific diet for this pet
  • transition from the current food to the new diet
  • preparation of the food (including cooking instructions as appropriate)
  • safe food handling
  • where to buy ingredients and additives
  • the importance of following the diet and not omitting key ingredients or supplements.

A typed copy of her suggestions will be sent to the owner along with various handouts.

The cost of a telephone nutritional consultation is $210 for one hour, payable by credit card.
